BlackCoffee Collections, installations and other work by SA designer Jacques van der Watt
Jacques van der Watt takes inspiration from two dissimilair artists for Black Coffee Spring/Summer 2016/2017.
The starting point was “Stoclet Frieze”, three mosaic panels created by legendary Austrian artist Gustav Klimt for Palais Stoclet, Brussels. The clothing echoes the geometries and rhythmic repetition of the piece using African Heritage fabrics, and layers of mesh. Another strong influence is the exquisitely composed, radically ornate photographs of Moroccan artist Hassan Hajjaj (often referred to as the Andy Warhol of Marrakech).
The installation compliments the range while providing context for the clothes. Fabrics include linen, printed cotton, mesh, lace and tuille. Prints are combined in complex configurations creating garments bordering on wearable art.
